Harlow 34 Blackheath Academy 5
Pre Season warm up game
In the last warm up game before the league season kicks off on Saturday Harlow entertained Blackheath Academy.
Blackheath started well keeping the ball through the phases, but the unable to penetrate the steady Harlow defence. Once Harlow had the chance they broke and good work from the Harlow pack slick hands between Lee Harron and Tommy Johnson put Matt Howard in at the corner for the first try of his two tries.
This settled the Harlow team and they returned to there quick game to set up Gary Brown's try. The domination up front meant Blackheath conceded a penalty which Neil Fiztpatrick passed to skipper Paul Eynon who drew in the defence and slipped the ball to Gary Brown who thundered over the line. Just before half time Matt Howard scored his second try proving there is still life in his old legs. The backs put together a well rehearsed moved which saw Howard race free and out pace the defence over the 40 yards to the line. In the second half Harlow were playing up the hill and were slow to start, this gave Blackheath the chance to apply pressure which eventually allowed them to score in the corner. The try was unconverted. The second half was much more closely contested until the final 15 minutes when Harlow began to pull away. Andy Vanston making his first appearance in this years pre-season, then scored two tries the first of which came from another well rehearsed backs move where Simon Vanbeck cleared the first line of the defence and off loaded to Vanston (Mr. Burns) who evaded two covering players and scored under the posts. Vanston's second try came from a break by Harlow debutant Tom Davies
playing at inside centre as he crashed into the defence he offloaded neatly
to Scott Romaine scored the final try he picked up from a ruck and ran like a man possessed at the Blackheath fly half and powered his way to the line, to complete match Sean Banks added the conversion. In a game against a youthful side Harlow's experienced players showed they focus and play to there strengths, which is a polite way of saying the old boys done OK . With the pre-season warm up games now complete Harlow look forward to the league campaign beginning on Saturday at league new boys Colchester. Captain Paul Eynon said "We have now had a completed a successful pre-season where we have learnt more about our abilities. The few new players we have in Lloyd Matchett, Scott Stober and Tom Davies all look as though they will settle into the team well, it should be a good season at Harlow this year and we now feel we are ready to start it."
