Blackheath Academy 10 Harlow 31
Pre-season friendly
This game was played in 20 minute intervals, allowing the coaches to change players, brief them and change tactics.
During the 1st period Harlow threatened to cut loose but
were restricted by a powerful young keen Blackheath side. Although we
managed a single try from a quick tap penalty taken by Lee Harron to
Jamie Pope who set up the ruck where Harron then missed out a few
players to Scott Romaine to muscle his way over the line. The try was
unconverted and left the score at 5-0 to Harlow at the end of the first
period.
During the second period Blackheath fought back and quickly scored catching the Harlow players napping. The Blackheath outside half eventually crossing the link.
Blackheath remained on the attack to score a second try
and to take them into the lead 10-5. Harlow then reverted to type and
following a number of Blackheath infringements, Harlow had a line out
five metres out. The ball was thrown to Harlow debutant Adam Bishop at
the front of the line out and the forwards muscled over for the try.
Mark Twinner eventually touching down and leveling the scores 10-10.
In the third period Blackheath should have taken the lead after a poor kick through by Wayne Morgan had intercepted by the spritely Blackheath back, however the young Blackheath outside half failed to touch the ball down, spilling it after he had crossed the try line. In the final 20 minute period Harlow started to pull away, dominating possession. The first try came from a scrum on the Harlow five metre line where new number eight Adam Bishop, picked up from the scrum, ran down the blind side gassed the winger on the outside and then sprinted for the line. This The next try came from and exquisite backs move putting new signing Will Grimley down the wing, he off loaded to open side flanker Mark Pickett who crossed the line after a very well executed move. This was converted by James McFerran. The final try came from turnover ball worked down the blind side, off loading amongst forwards and backs with Scott Romaine finally crossing the line for his second try of the day. This was also converted by James McFerran. This rounded off the day with some polish after a hard fought win.
