Colchester 15 Harlow 19
London Three North East
Three great tries all scored by the wingers after great handling moves clinched the game for Harlow on Saturday. A side who have their backs to the wall are always dangerous and bottom placed Colchester certainly made Harlow work very hard to take the points on Saturday. Although the Harlow forwards had their traditional control of the lineouts and the rolling maul a strong committed home pack worked hard all afternoon to prevent Harlow from breaking midfield, Their fly half covered made good use of the boot to keep the Rams out of striking distance for much of the game. After 5 minutes Colchester took an early lead when their No. 10 slotted a neat drop goal for a 3 – 0 lead. Harlow countered strongly and given possession after about 10 minutes they attacked through the forwards setting up three good rucks before spinning the ball wide. Will Grimley on the wing drifter in drawing the defender before going wide to take him on the outside and used his pace to win the race for the line. Following a few minutes of play midfield the Colchester pack drove Harlow back on the defensive and a forward drive put the home No/ 8 over for an unconverted try making it 8 – 5 to Colchester at the end of the first quarter. For ten minutes the Harlow pack struggled to establish control. Romaine, Barnard and Eynon all made good breaks but were unable to get the ball clear. Finally after 30 minutes the Harlow backs made a half break. Vanbeck on the wing had a good 50/50 option and the ball moved with through Jarvis and Bohl to give him his chance. He went outside the first defender and then as he crossed the line brushed off another to cut in towards the posts, touching down to give Ford a good shot at goal. The skipper slotted the kick to give Harlow an 8 – 12 lead. In the final 10 minutes of the half Harlow had several half chances and on the point of half time the link up worked again sending Vanbeck in for his second try which with Ford’s conversion game Harlow an 8 – 19 lead at the interval.Colchester came back strongly in the early part of the second half making good use of their forwards in support of the backs. The strategy paid off and after 10 minutes their No. 4 powered his way over for a try which their fly half converted cutting the margin to 15 – 19. Although Harlow had some good scoring opportunities Colchester realized that the real danger was out wide and they kept play as tight as possible using their mobile back row to shut down Harlow in the centre. A further Colchester attack saw them almost make the line and only determined defence finishing with a massive tackle by Claridge stopped them. After defending in their own 22 for some minutes a half break by Harron and then a good clearance kick by McFerran took play back to midfield. In the final quarter Harlow had more of the territory and looked as though they might make the game safe. One very good blind side break by Harron and McFerran almost put Vanbeck away for his third try but Colchester just managed to stop the move a yard short. With only seconds on the clock Colchester opted to run a penalty form their 10 meter line. The ball went in to touch and there was just time for the lineout before at the next breakdown Harlow were pleased to hear the final whistle.
