Harlow 13 Ipswich 17
London Three North East
With
Harlow
still under pressure with a long injury list a number of players who have
not played for a considerable time turned out on Saturday including Matt
Howard who came out of retirement.
Winger Simon Vanbeck and centre Wayne Morgan
both moved to flanker and both tackled hard to break down the
Ipswich
attacks. The allround commitment almost paid off when they put the visitors
under great pressure in the final quarter.
Up to the start, the pitch had been wet but not
too bad a surface but a massive downpour just before kick of and during most
of the first half turned it to a very slippery mud bath.
It was a deciding factor, giving the edge to the
visiting pack who were considerably heavier and neutralizing the pace
advantage of
Harlow.
Ipswich started strongly driving Harlow back into their own 22 and after
about 10 minutes set up a rolling maul
near the Harlow
line. The
defenders lost their footing and were driven back allowing the visiting fly
half to get over for a 5 point lead.
Harlow took
play back to the visitors and made several attempts to run the ball,
Stradling at inside centre in particular was able to make ground. Josh Bohl
closed the gap for Harlow
with a penalty despite having to kick on a surface which game no support.
From the re-start Ipswich took play back into
the Harlow
halof and again their pack drove into the corner for
another try making it 10 – 3 at half time.
The
second half started well for
Harlow and a
second penalty from Bohl closed the margin to 10 – 6. They continued to run
the ball at the visitors with No. 8 Eynon and Howard both making good
ground. A penalty allowed
Ipswich back up field and then a
break away try and conversion took the lead to 17 – 6. In the closing
quarter
Harlow
put steady pressure on the visitors and a good move by the backs midfield
allowed Bohl to make a clean break to run 30 yards for a touchdown under the
posts. His own conversion took it to 13 – 17. Harlow hammered at the line
right up to the end with a good run by Grimley stopped inches short and
several good rolling mauls almost breaking through but Ipswich held on to
take the points.
Harlow
have a week off before they are away to second placed Diss. They will need
to put out a strong and committed side to hold the
Norfolk
side who aren now certain to make the pay offs for promotion. They will
finish their league campaign with a home game against Braintree.
A win
in at least one of the two outstanding games should
allow them to hold their present 4th
place.
