Brentwood 27 Harlow
7
(Half time 13 - 7)
London Three North East League
Defensive errors allowed the home side to run in four
tries, ,two of which were converted. Brentwood
also kicked a penalty goal to earn them their first two points of the
season.
Harlow
started well almost scoring when Wing Will Grimley was stopped a metre short
of the line. The ball ran loose and the Brentwood full back ran up the
vacant wing to score. The Rams then had to defend for a ten minute spell and
held out until they conceded a penalty in front of the posts to leave them
with a 8-0 deficit.
Brentwood
then scored after wining a lineout and passing the ball out to the wing who
went over. The conversion was missed.
Harlow
began to dominate the scrummages and won good line out ball but were unable
to turn their possession into points.
Although the home side
were under pressure in the set pieces they fought hard in the loose play and
won turnover ball.
After 30 minutes Harlow
were awarded a scrummage just outside the Brentwood twenty two and from the
scrum the ball was passed out to
Danie Vissar , Harlow’s new signing and the outside centre ran powerfully to
score .Fly half Paul Humphries made no mistake with the conversion.
For the rest of the
first half Harlow dominated and had two
long distance penalty chances
but missed both.
From the restart Kane
Claridge charged down a clearance kick but was stopped from scoring short of
the line. Brentwood defended very well despite the Harlow team mounting a series of attacks into their twenty
two. On 60 minutes prop Ricky McKinley was replaced by Rob Treamer, the
youngster carrying on the good work of the Harlow
front row. Brentwood
then broke away to force a scrummage ten metres out and their number
10 scampered through on the
blind side to score. Following
more unsuccessful attempts by the Rams Brentwood scored another try when
they hacked through and the Harlow defence fumbled the ball allowing the
Brentwood centre to cross the line.
In the last ten minutes
wing forward Shaun Roberts gave way to Mark Bowering and fullback James
McFerran was replaced by Wayne Morgan. Harlow finished the game camped in
the Brentwood twenty two but were unable to
crack the stout defence of the home side who deserved their win.
Although defeated
Harlow, who were without four first choice players can
be pleased with the forwards performance and the promising play of
the new boys in the three quarters. They will however have to tighten up
their defence for the home game against Rochford next week.
