Harlow 20 Old Streetonians 23

London League Division Two North East

10th September 2010

The visitors from East London showed why they have been promoted for the last three years in a close encounter at Ram Gorse on Saturday.
The Harlow team began their league campaign with several first choice players unavailable including Skipper Scott Romaine. It was Streetonians who opened the scoring with a penalty from centre Andy Dunn in the second minute. This spurred the Harlow pack on to fight their way into the visitors' twenty two allowing Director of Rugby, Lee Harron, to peel off the back of the maul and score a try, converted by fly half Michael Dobson. Streetonians then mounted a fast attack through the centre and their scrum half, Chris McAtominey scored in the corner.
Harlow second row Mark Twiner was then sin binned for failing to roll away after tackling the man. While Harlow were down to fourteen men Streetonians scored another try. Harlow attacked the opposition twenty two but lost possession and the Streeetonian's winger, Tom Perry, ran the length of the pitch to score.
Despite trailing 7 -18 at this stage Harlow continued to attack and were rewarded with a second try from Harron just before the interval . The conversion was missed, leaving the score at 12--18.
The second half began with Harlow working hard to win possession, the scrummage doing well but line outs were less successful. Streetonians prop Will O.'shea was yellow carded for foul play leading to a successful penalty kick by Dobson. Harlow now took control for the next fifteen minutes but failed to score, They failed to hold the final pass and twice when the winger was put away in space the Referee adjudged that the final pass was forward. Eventually it was the visitors who broke the strangle hold and broke away to score a fourth try, wing Colin McAndrew the scorer.
With an eight point lead Streetonians found themselves in a winning position but the last ten minutes saw tremendous pressure from the Rams. Having forced a five metre scrum the Rams scored to bring the score to 20-23, prop Paul Prindiville the scorer. In the last few minutes the Streetonians fly half Sam Ingleby was red carded for persistent foul play and dissent leaving Harlow with a penalty under the posts. They had the choice to run the ball trying to get the win or to kick the penalty for a draw, Sadly they opted to run the ball and were stopped on the line thus losing the match. Despite the disappointment of losing a match they should have won, Harlow should be pleased with the performance of three new boys playing their first game for the First XV .Props Martin Cunningham and James Lewis helped by the experience of hooker Martin Mallia and Paul Prindiville made a great impression in the front row while Mark Barr came on for the injured Mark Twiner at lock and did well.
