Harlow knew before their visit to mid table Thurrock that their heavier and
well drilled pack would be a problem. That proved to be the case with the
home side wrapping up the game by half time. The Harlow squad produced a
very high work rate but efficient use of the rolling maul by Thurrock denied
them the quality possession necessary to launch effective attacks.
After a period of initial pressure that Harlow failed to convert into
points Thurrock broke away to score. They were able to dominate possession
for the rest of the half and by exploiting a disorganised Rams’ defence,
took the score to 29-0. by half time. The Harlow line out was not
functioning as well as normal and Harlow were unable to produce the quality
ball they needed to break the organised Thurrock defence.
The second half saw Thurrock outscore Harlow two tries to one, the
Harlow effort being the best of the game. From a Lineout on the right
hand side of the pitch Harlow threw in short and drove up the field,
this caught Thurrock and Harlow we able to make 10 or so yards quickly. The
ball was passed out to the backs who used a rehearsed move with full back
Alasdair Phillips coming into the back line splitting the Thurrock defence
he then tried to round the last defender before off loading to Paul Eynon
who was up in support. A well worked move late in the game received a well
deserved cheer from the home crowd. Thurrock replied with a try of their own
to round off the game 41-5.
