Harlow 3 Woodford 29 Powergen London & S. E. Div II North After a bright spell of ten minutes attacking play Harlow came away with a well struck penalty from David Stradling and looked as if they would put recent poor performances behind them. The visitors threatened in the three quarters but were unable to penetrate until they moved the ball wide and Keene on the left wing scored in the corner. Harlow’s influential Jarvis was injured in defending and had to retire, Esterhuyze moving to fly half and Fozzie Brown coming in at full back. Harlow’s woes continued when coach Alan Yates was sin-binned for ten minutes and Woodford put a penalty into the Harlow twenty two and mauled over the line to score their second try on the stroke of half time. Soon after the start of the second half Woodford added a third try from a ruck their lock, Ben Williams the scorer. Harlow now lost a second player to the touchline when Cochrane was sin-binned for being offside in the ruck. Harlow defended the drive from Woodford but then they were unable to clear the ball from behind their own goal line and the Woodford back row pounced to score. This try was converted by Niall Moody. The Rams forced a penalty from forty meters out which Stradling attempted but the ball went just wide and the home side found themselves defending again. From a five meter scrum Woodford’s scrum half Nick Hepton dummied his pass and crossed the line. Another conversion from Moody was the final score. Although there were some individual moments of brilliance from some of the Harlow team they were unable to win enough good possession or retain the ball long enough to make any real progress. Basic errors compounded their problems and Woodford were worthy winners on the day. Harlow First XV. Ephgrave, Johnson, Yates, Grover, Eynon, Cochrane, Handscombe, Lakin, Roth, Jarvis (Sub. The Young Rams returned to winning ways with a super performance against old rivals Brentwood, who have always scored twenty or more points against them in the past. Harlow went on the offensive from the word go and after five minutes it was inside centre Wayne Heapy who ran the ball over the line following some driving play by his pack. Martin O’Dell converted the try , the first of four successful kicks. The Harlow forwards, giving away weight and height to the Brentwood pack, outrucked the opposition and dominated the loose play. Harlow’s new boy Andre Stensen, a recent arrival from New Zealand had an excellent debut. One of the smallest players on the field his spirit and energy was an example to all. Brentwood attacked and were awarded a penalty but missed the kick. It was Harlow who scored again when outside centre Jamie Fricker cut through the middle and just reached the line despite the attentions of two defenders. Brentwood, who competed throughout, to their cfredit, put a penalty kick into the corner and mauled their way over the line, their try unconverted. This brought fresh efforts form the Young Rams and flanker Mark Bowering won the ball in loose play and crashed over, O’Dell’s conversion giving the Harlow boys a lead of 19-5 at half time. In the second half Brentwood kept pressing forward and the home side had to defend well but a looping run down the right flank by O’Dell from a quick tap penalty resulted in Skipper James Hayden taking the final pass to score, O’Dell again successful with the conversion. The Harlow backs were always threatening and full back Dan Smith came into the line thirty metres out. He was stopped inches short but scrum half Grant Dunn was there to dive over the line and O’Dell again converted. In the dying minutes Harlow again attacked and forced mistakes from the Brentwood defence. It was Bowering who was there again to drive over to finish the game. Harlow Colts.
