Finals day of the Harlow six-a-side touch rugby tournament. Over 200 players and spectators turned up Harlow Rugby Club's Ram Gorse ground on Saturday to enjoy the Finals Day of the month-long Ken Spooner Touch Rugby Tournament Despite some pretty dark looking clouds that lurked for most of the afternoon, it was a great occasion where some excellent rugby was displayed by the teams. From the youngest (16 year old) to the oldest (er, very old!) players, it was fun all the way as the teams battled to win the coveted title. That honour fell, in the end, to Ben Jarvis's team who narrowly pipped the Colts team to walk off with the trophies. Over £700 has been raised by the event that will help support Youth Rugby Development in the town through the Ken Spooner memorial Fund. This was set up by the club in memory of the late Ken Spooner who worked so hard for the development of the youth game both in the Harlow club and with Essex and Eastern Counties teams. The fund not only supports improved youth facilities at the club but also helps to finance other initiatives such as the club’s programme for sending its RFU trained coaches into Harlow schools to introduce youngsters to the game. The club would like to thank tournament organizer Ken Potter who made the competition so enjoyable for so many players and also his team of helpers including the loyal band of referees from Harlow and neighbouring clubs. |
