Memories of John Hurley, at Harlow Rugby Club

John Hurley, has been Harlow Rugby Club’s President for the past year, he past away Friday 15th October 2004.

John has been a member of Harlow Rugby Club since he first came to the New Town in the early 60‘s.
He participated at every level within the club from First XV to the lower echelons - including the infamous Fourth XV (the Sinners) of the 1970’s.

After his playing career he held many positions in the club from Playing Chairman to managing the very successful Colts side of the 1980’s that for many years was the backbone of the 1st XV in the late 80's and 90's

John went on to take over the management of the Eastern Counties Colts, including their most successful year in 1991 when they were the losing finalists in the National Colts Cup at Twickenham. The side included 3 Harlow players and that famous old Eastern Counties Colt, Jason Leonard.

John then became Harlow Rugby Club Chairman - during a period of considerable playing success for the club and during which time he was responsible for expanding the clubhouse to its current size. Since relinquishing the Chairmanship John has always been co-opted to the Club’s Executive Committee in an advisory capacity where his experience and good humour have proved invaluable.

John was the instigator of the club’s attempt to re-locate from Ram Gorse to new premises, driven as ever by his wish to provide improved facilities for Harlow youngsters wishing to play Rugby. The same cause - sporting opportunities for young people - this led to his becoming a leading member of Harlow Sports Trust.

John's funeral will take place at Harlow Crematorium on Tuesday the 26th of October at 12 O'clock, then afterwards at Harlow Rugby Club, The Family have requested that no flowers be sent and that donations can be sent to Daniel Robertson (Funeral Directors) or Harlow Rugby Club, donations collected will be used to support The High Dependency Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Diabetics Charity.

Shocked and sad to hear of John. He gave alot of his time and effort to the club over the years, all with passion and enthusiasm. One little memory that still makes me chuckle, is his tale of his then teenage son Dave treating his house like 'a bloody hotel'. Dave's response? He came home drunk again and left his shoes outside his bedroom door to be polished for work the next day! If I have that slightly wrong Dave, or whether you simply said that was what you might do, it still makes me smile! RIP John.

Served with John on several execs, steering commitees, harlow sports partnerships etc etc, often at loggerheads but of late very often of like minds ( either I or John must have mellowed ) but I especially enjoyed his dry wit and commitment to the club and rugby in general.

Special memories of the 2001 Lions tour when it was evident he was already struggling with his illness - his passion for rugby & people in red shone through it all - I was dearly looking forward to his critique of the Club Renewal Project - I daresay he would have tapped me on the arm and whispered very very quietly in my ear "the mound is great,Alan but nobody can see anything from the bloody patio now !"

John was very much the "architect" of the move I hope that those of us that witnessed his dream have the opportunity to bring it to full fruition for him.

John was a very strong supporter of the merit table concept when it was first started. He presented the trophy (the Hurley Robertson Cup) for the table winners at the end of this first season (when there was only one table) and this continues to be the trophy for the Deuxieme South winners.

More widely John, who came to Harlow in 1962 (and played for the club within a week of his arrival), made a tremendous contribution to the game at both Senior and Junior (especially Colts) levels, for Harlow, Essex, Eastern Counties and the London Division throughout the last 40-plus years. He will be missed greatly.

A man who put a lot of time into the club, especially behind the scenes. He will be sorely missed by everyone. My sympathies to his family.

My sympathies to all of John's family. John was a man who always had a positive word for you particularly when at Colts level where he did so much for Harlow players to reach Eastern Counties level and beyond. RIP
