Harlow Ladies 27 Woodbridge 22
(14th October 2007)
Harlow Ladies ran in five very good tries to clinch a very
well deserved win over a talented Woodbridge side which included a Welsh
international fly half. Congratulations go to Zoe Walker and Gemma Acraman
making their debut for Harlow.
Overall the visitors probably had more possession and recycled the ball well
at the breakdown but very committed tacking by Harlow Ladies prevented them
from exploiting this.
Harlow had a dream start when fly half Keighly Diprose slipped two defenders
deep in her own half to break clear and sprint 60 years for the touchdown.
The visitors countered but on ten minutes Harlow winger Becky Hodges broke
clear and ran in another 50 yard try outdistancing the defending winger with
a great turn of speed. Woodbridge were not going to give up the game that
easily and countered hard running in a good try of their own on 20 minutes
to bring the score to 10 – 5 for Harlow. Just before the interval Sara
Stimpson ran in another try for Harlow and then Woodbridge hit back to make
it 15 – 10 at the turnaround.
Playing against the slope in the second half Harlow had to weather the
threat of a number of players with the pace to be a real threat. To some
extent they countered this with some very accurate touch kicking mainly by
Stimpson which moved play into the visitors half. Good work by the Harlow
lineout with Emily Gizzi taking clean Harlow ball and pressuring the
opposition throws added to the effectiveness of the tactic. Another try but
Stimpson extended the Harlow lead to 20 – 10 but then in the final quarter
Woodbridge mounted a very strong counter attack eventually putting their fly
half under the posts for 20 – 15 to Harlow. They should have cut the margin
to three points but their kicker sliced her attempt. From the restart Harlow
made a good touch in the visitors 22 and kept play there with robust forward
play. Woodbridge were penalised for killing the ball 10 yards out from their
line. Harlow scrum half Nichola King grabbed the ball and took a quick tap
kick and went for the line. She was held a metre short but drove her way
over and managed to twist free of the tackle to touch down. Becky Conway was
on target with the conversion taking the Harlow total to 27. In the closing
minutes Woodbridge added a converted try of their own but Harlow held on for
a great win.
