Maidenhead Ladies 0 Harlow
Ladies 29
13th February 2011
12 A Side Friendly
Harlow Ladies travelled away to Maidenhead to play a development 12 aside
friendly. Harlow took a reduced squad with several players nursing injuries
sustained from last week's physical encounter with Southwold. The game did
however allow new and inexperienced players to get some match experience.
To allow coaches from both sides plenty of opportunities to work with their
squads the match was played as 4 quarters of 15 minutes.
Harlow started the 1st quarter kicking off into the wind and rain. After 3
minutes from a rolling maul the ball was grounded in the hands of Tracey Lee
and Claire Lacey for a 5 - 0 lead. It was a great piece of forward play by
the whole pack but the debate as to who scored continues! Immediately from
the kick off by Maidenhead, Lucie Gibson, at fly half, caught the ball
cleanly and ran around the defence and scored! The try was not converted.
Three minutes from the end of the quarter Abigail Perry joined the attacking
line from full-back to create the overlap and outpaced the Maidenhead
defence to score a try under the posts, converted by Nikky Millman. The
quarter ended with Harlow 17 – 0 ahead.
The second quarter saw Samantha Wheeler come on for her Harlow debut at
loose-head prop. She showed excellent scrummaging skills and will give
Harlow important selection options as several of their other front row
players also have experience at other positions in the pack. The home side
tightened their defence and no scores came in this session.
In the 3rd Quarter Harlow continued to experiment with player positions when
Rebekah Mann (4) and Carla Marshall (14) swapped positions. The session
added a well taken unconverted try for Harlow; in a two on one situation 10
metres from the try line, Tracey Lee drew the defender; offloaded to Davina
McLellan who scored!
In the 4th Quarter Harlow’s final try came from pressure by Harlow in the
Maidenhead 22 which led to them attempting to clear their line. A charge
down of the clearance kick by Harlow led to the ball going loose and Sophie
Bray dived on it and scored! Conversion by Nikky Millman. In the final 10
minutes a head injury to Lucie Gibson resulted in a move of Nikky Millman to
fly-half; Leah Dixon to outside centre and Tina Baldwin came in at
tight-head prop.
Team: 1. Tina Baldwin/Samantha Wheeler; 2. Sarah Lucas; 3. Leah Dixon; 4.
Rebekah Mann; 5. Tracey Lee (Capt); 8. Claire Lacey; 9. Sophie Bray; 10.
Lucie Gibson; 12. Davina McLellan; 13. Nikky Millman; 14. Carla Marshall;
15. Abigail Perry
The game gave Harlow some good options as they prepare to meet Hitchin in
the league this weekend. In particular Samantha Wheeler’s excellent debut at
scrummaging; Sophie Bray for her game control at Scrum-Half; Nikky Millman
for her ability to put in a great performance in several positions; and
Davina McLellan for her strong attacking lines and awesome defensive
tackling. The ability of many of the Harlow players to cover more than one
position and to do it well is very important.
