Harlow Ladies 15
Southwold Ladies 7
6th February 2011
League:
RFUW National
Challenge SE Div 2 N
A determined Harlow ladies squad
fought very hard on Sunday to overcome both a bitterly cold wind and a
committed and very physical Southwold team. The Harlow pack showed enormous
commitment, producing plenty of possession and making very good use of the
driving maul to force the visitors back deep into their own territory. On a
number of occasions the Southwold ladies managed to move the ball wide to
their three-quarters and came very close to breaking clear. A combination of
pace and determined tackling by the Harlow backs however closed them down,
denying them at least three good scoring opportunities.
Harlow started strongly using their pack to drive forward into Southwold
territory. The visitors however made good use of the slope and the wind to
clear the ball downfield and away from danger. On several occasions
penalties from rucking infringements cost Harlow hard won territory. On
about 20 minutes however they set up a good ruck close to the Southwold
line. Three times they attempted to pick up and drive through but were held
back before finally Kelly Cotterill playing at prop forced her way through
for the try and a five point lead to Harlow. Southwold countered strongly
and towards the end of the half established a good attacking position inside
the Harlow 22 from where they moved the ball wide before cutting in for the
try. They slotted the conversion allowing them to go into the interval with
a seven points to five lead.
In the second half with the wind in their favour Harlow were able to keep
the bulk of the play in the Southwold half. The strong wind however made it
difficult for the backs to move the ball wide quickly and Southwold were
able to shut down several good handling moves. Harlow responded by a making
good use of their dominance in the maul driving the visitors back on a
number of occasions and eventually it was flanker Nikky Millman who peeled
off with the ball to touch down close to the posts. Rebecca Conway was on
target with the conversion giving Harlow a 12 points to 7 lead. Southwold
countered strongly and their backs produced two breaks from within their own
half which looked as though they were going to lead to a score. Their Harlow
counterparts however were able to match them for pace and determined
tackling removed the threat. When in the closing minutes Harlow were awarded
a penalty they opted to kick for goal, seeking a two score margin. Rebecca
Conway put the ball cleanly through the posts making the final score 15
points to 7 in favour of Harlow.
Tries: Kelly Cotterill, Nikky Millman

This result consolidates the Harlow lead at the top of the table where they
are now all four points clear of Tabard ladies. The Hertfordshire side drew
with Old Albanians on Sunday which further strengthens the Harlow position.
They do however have a game in hand over Harlow and with most of the teams
in this division being closely matched the Harlow ladies will have to keep
up the pressure right through to the end of the season.
