Harlow Ladies 58 Wellingborough
Ladies 12
RFUW NC SE Div 2 N
13th March 2011
Harlow ladies kept their promotion challenge alive with a very convincing
win over Wellingborough on Sunday. They ran in 10 good tries but more
importantly both the forwards and the backs made a big contribution to the
game as a whole and to the scoreline. In recent games although they have
been winning Harlow have allowed themselves to be drawn into a forward
contest rather than take full advantage of the speed that they have in the
backs. On Sunday however they entertained a good turnout of supporters with
a display of real pace and quality ball handling, including an excellent hat
trick by fly half Lucie Gibson.
Harlow started strongly playing up the slope and launched a good attack to
the corner where their forwards drove towards the line setting up an
opportunity for number eight Claire Lacey to go over for the first try and a
5 Point lead. Wellingborough countered very well from the restart forcing a
penalty and taking play down into the Harlow 22. Harlow ladies defended well
for a couple of minutes before Wellingborough powered their way over to
level the score. For the next five minutes it was an even contest midfield
before Wellingborough kicked ahead allowing Harlow fullback Abigail Perry to
catch the ball cleanly and break clear for a sixty to yard solo run to touch
down in the corner. From the restart Harlow were again on to the attack
pushing the visitors back into their own 22. From a ruck they moved the ball
wide to Davina McLellan at centre who ran hard at the defence handing off
two players and breaking the tackle of the third to cross the line and touch
down for the try. Rebecca Conway was on target with the conversion putting
Harlow ahead by 17 points to 5. Harlow suffered their only setback of the
game when the Wellingborough scrum half broke clear and sprinted to within a
few yards of the try line before being brought down by a high tackle
resulting in a penalty try to the visitors which they converted. A few
minutes later Harlow were again on the attack; this time with a scrum about
20 yards out from the Wellingborough try line. The ball came out awkwardly
for the Wellingborough scrum half and Harlow flanker Leah Dixon peeled off
to steal it and power her way over the line for a good opportunist try. Just
before halftime Lucie Gibson, the Harlow fly half, did very well to control
a difficult higher ball and sprinted through the defence to touch down under
the posts; Rebecca Conway converted for a 29 points to 12 lead at halftime.
With the slope in their favour Harlow started strongly and on several
occasions made good use of the deep kick to peg the visitors back into their
own half. A good drive by the Harlow pack again saw Claire Lacey break clear
to touch down for a further try. This was followed soon after by a good move
from the Harlow backs passing the ball wide for Lucie Gibson to come back
into the line and sprint clear for the touchdown. After a short period of
cut and thrust play midfield Harlow were again on the attack with the
forwards trying to power their way towards the Wellingborough line. Several
drives were held up before Kelly Cotterill, playing at prop, scooped up the
ball and dropped her shoulder to take out a defender and crash over the line
for the try. From the restart Wellingborough got back on to the attack and a
penalty conceded by Harlow allowed them to setup a good attack inside the
22. From a line-out they drove towards the line before a player peeled away
with the ball looking as though she was going to score. She had not however
allowed for Carla Marshall who took her out with a massive tackle; Harlow
gathered the loose ball and kicked downfield for touch. The threat was over.
Harlow again put be visitors under pressure with good forward play and this
time it was scrum half Nikky Millman who broke away with the ball to touch
down for the try: Rebecca Conway converted taking Harlow score to 51 points
to 12. Another good breakout by the Harlow backs saw Lucie Gibson complete
or hat trick with a try under the posts converted to make the final score 58
points to 12.
This result leaves Harlow in third place behind tabard and Old Albanians.
However they have a match in hand over both of these sides and still have to
play them so they face a tough commitment in the remaining weeks of the
season but the title is potentially within their reach. The first challenge
will come this Sunday when they are away to second placed Old Albanians. It
is hoped that a number of Harlow supporters will make the journey across for
this important encounter.
