Harlow Mini Rugby Festival

Well over 300 children, both boys and girls age from 6 to 11 took part in the Harlow Rugby Club Mini Rugby Festival last Sunday.  There were six competitions, one for each year group from under 7s to under 12s. The emphasis in rugby at this age is that the children take part and enjoy themselves. This was very much the case and although teams tried really hard to win their games the thing that came through clearly to the very large number of spectators was the friendly and sporting approach shown by everyone involved. Harlow Rugby Club would like to thank the very large number of people who turned out to help stage the event as referees, stewards recorders, first aiders and running the catering facilities. Particular credit goes to Harlow Chair of Mini Rugby Sean Wilkinson who has been worked hard for many weeks to bring it all together

Under 7's

Harlow fielded two teams in this age group with every child lining up in their first festival, and many their first competitive match in the club colours. This group was won by Ilford; Harlow Reds finished second losing to Ilford after wins over Harlow Greens and Wanstead. Harlow Greens taking third place.

Under 8's

The under 8's came closer than the scores suggest, facing very strong opposition in the group, with Wanstead and Romford both fielding large squads with a lot of experience, Of the 9 players in the Harlow squad six are new to the game this season and did very well to push the much more experienced sides to close scores. Wansrtead won the group with Romford as runner up.

Under 9's

Again Harlow fielded two teams in this age group; with all the players facing there first match involving contact. The opening match was a home clash, handing the greens a confidence boosting start to the tournament taking an impressive 5-0 win. They went on to win the group with Wanstead taking second.

Under 10's

Harlow’s under 10s took on a strong group from East London with Romford, Ilford and Wanstead all bringing large squads. Wanstead started with an impressive 3-0 win over Romford before Harlow 10's showed their strength playing out a hard 3-2 win over Ilford. Harlow got stronger as the tournament progressed coming out clear winners with Ilford taking second slot.

Under 11's

Romford started strongly with a 40 point win over Wanstead before Harlow opened their account with a good win over Ilford. Harlow went on to beat Wanstead but lost to the group winners Romford so finished in a creditable second place.

Under 12's

No Harlow side was entered as our numbers are small in this group. Cheshunt brought there under 12's team over the vacant slot.  The winners were Wanstead in a close contest with runners up Romford.
