Harlow Vets 12 Romford Vets 17 25th October 2009
Only a
penalty goal and one conversion separated these two sides
and saw the newly formed
Harlow Vets lose
their first game. Romford
played ten man rugby very effectively with their big pack and strangled
Harlow’s possession. Both of their tries came from their forwards who
dominated the set –pieces, and only desperate
defence from Harlow kept them from adding
to their points tally.
The
visitors took the lead after ten minutes of pressure in the Harlow twenty
two when they rucked the ball to
the open side flanker who crashed over from five metres. The Rams, sponsored by Attwater Solicitors, came back at Romford after twenty minutes with a well worked backs move, the scorer inside centre Alan Price. Darren Harrison made no mistake with the conversion . Romford replied within minutes, scoring another try from a five metre scrummage, the conversion through the posts. Just before the half time whistle Harlow scored again this time a well placed grubber kick from Price to winger Matt Howard who was unstoppable and touched down. The score at half time 14-12 to the visitors. Romford shut the game down in the second half keeping the ball in their forwards’ possession and the Harlow backs had no chance to run the ball. A Romford penalty early on in the half was missed and then Price went just wide with two long range efforts. Mid way through the half Romford extended their lead with a penalty and the Rams were unable to get back into the game.
