Harlow 5 Brentwood 5 Friendly ish 5th November 2011 By Dave Oastler
It was great to see familiar faces around the changing room on saturday
again, listen to the usual banter and take in the various forms of chakras
being performed, lucky gonks being rubbed, deep tissue rubs being sniffed
and all manner of strappings going on- if ever anyone is feeling a little
under par they should just spend some time in a vets changing room and then
they'd see some heart warming sights............
Our first game of the season on Saturday saw us take on a well-prepared
Brentwood side; last season we were very physical with them and they had
certainly called in their bigger guns to face up to us this time round!
With very little time to prepare tactically our marauding pack soon took the
game to them- despite only having one line out call :0)- there were many
scrappy moments throughout but one thing that stood out for me was how hard
we worked to win the ball back, and we definitely dominated in the rucks.
Brentwood turned to their favourite tactic of mauling which didn't provide
much of a spectacle, and when they ran the ball they were easily contained
by our backs. The game finished as a five all draw which extends our
unbeaten run- we have now only lost one game since the inception of this
particular crew 3 season ago, so well done to all! Special mentions
must go to Pete Keeling who decided laying his floor until 3 am was sensible
pre-match prep; to Martin Hovell for his first Vets game and playing out of
position; to Scummy for the most reluctant acceptance to play since Barry
Jenks infamous "I suppose I don't have any real excuse not to play" but
making a number of searching runs during the game (mainly searching for the
exit), to Duncan Reynolds who appeared to possess more energy than Jonny
Hewlett, and indeed to Jonny 'Robocop' Hewlett who somehow managed to
increase his collection of neoprene protection with a fetching headguard...........
Just two things to mention then: (i) our next game
is away to Romford on 10th December, anyone who wasn't around Saturday can
you please let me know if you're available
and (ii) there is a comedy night being held at the club on
25th November with proceeds going towards the 4th team away game to
Barcelona. Tickets are £10 each from Mark Wedd I believe, there is a minimum
age of 18 required but open to both sexes. Please contact Mark on
markwedd@live.co.uk, through
facebook or do the old fashioned thing of seeing him at the club!
