Shelford Colts  39  Harlow Colts  0

The Young Rams, depleted by injuries, took a weakened team to Shelford and found the going tough although they rallied in the second half. The home side were too strong for Harlow scoring five tries before the interval with one conversion.

Harlow’s best efforts came from stand in fly half Dan Hockley who almost scored twice.

The young Rams showed great commitment to improve in the second half and restricted Shelford to only two scores. The tackling and covering were much improved and with the return of three regular players the Rams should do better next week at Harpenden in the first round of the National Colts Cup.

The Harlow Under 17’s began their season with a good performance against a strong Shelford team. Harlow competed well in the loose and had good possession. Two break away tries, neither of which was converted , gave the visitors a 10-0 lead but a try from flanker Will Smith, converted by Danny Smith left the score at 10-7 to Shelford at the interval. Harlow were unlucky to not be in the lead, an effort by wing Sid Mortimer being disallowed.

The visitors brought on several fresh players in the second half and Harlow began to tire. Shelford scored four tries but the Young Rams had the last word with a superb individual effort from scrum half Sam Gregory. The Harlow skipper beat four men as he made his way over the line. This was a good all round performance from the Harlow lads.

Although outclassed by a Shelford side which had a huge squad of players available, the Harlow boys can be proud of their efforts and the two tries they scored.

The Young Rams started well with a 20 metre maul but after the first ten minutes Shelford began to break through and some poor defending allowed them to score six tries .The score at half time was 34-0 to the hosts.

A greater commitment in the second half from James Peddar and Jordan Dunn, Harlow’s  two second row players, with support from  Dave Briggenshaw and number 8 Jacob Bessant  tackling well throughout ,reduced the flow of tries from the hosts.  Briggenshaw was outstanding , the fly half scoring both the Harlow tries and converting both goals as well.

The Junior Rams allowed Shelford to build up a 24-0 lead in a first half in which they defended poorly but were a different team in the second half scoring two tries without reply. With three new players making their debuts for Harlow the team effort was disjointed early on but Liam Dowers, Luke O’Len and in particular centre Trei Clarke all showed promise.

Harlow bounced back after the interval, tries coming from outside centre Mitchell Cobbins and flanker Henry Lean, with one try converted by fly half Ryan Matthew.

A great come back from the Junior Rams which bodes well for the future.

Although outclassed by a powerful Shelford side, the Junior Rams did well to pull back two tries in the second half despite trailing  by a large margin.

The home side started off very well and lead 26-0 at the interval. Harlow scored at the beginning of the second half when flanker Josh Doe fought his way to the line from just outside the twenty two.

Shelford then regained their superiority and it was near the end when Harlow’s  Vinnie Hunter sidestepped through to score his try which he then converted.
