Looking as old as he did twenty years ago, Scummy made his debut for the first team in 1984 and can still talk as good a game as ever - although snatched between more desperate gasps of breath these days. His favourite position is midfield general, organising others to do his running and tackling for him - a position past team mates say he's always played whatever number shirt you gave him!

He joined the club as a junior in 1979 in time to watch his brother, David (Big Scum) captain the famed Harlow Colts that won the Essex Cup for the first time and to finish the season 36 games unbeaten. To start with, on Sundays Keith (Baby Scum) played for and went on to captain the Harlow U16's and on Saturdays developed his utility skills (...master of none) over on the cow meadow playing in Harlow's seventh team (yes, Harlow used to field seven senior sides on some saturdays!).

During three and a half year period from December 1978, Harlow Colts set the incredible record of going unbeaten for 105 games. At the age of 16, Keith (Baby Scum) made his colts debut against Bedford - the 106th game since Harlow Colts last lost! Always concentrating on the positive, Scummy likes to think of that game as his contribution to helping lift the heavy burden of expectancy that came with the colts' three and a half year unbeaten record - he also likes to remember that it started with a Handscomb in the team and ended with a Handscomb in the team (as well as a few Lees brothers, and if they want the accolade for themselves then Scummy says they'll get no argument from him...its all theirs...no problem!).

Later, Baby Scum followed in Big Scum's footsteps as Colts captain in a team whose talent saw them achieve the landmark victory over Rosslyn Park Colts (establishing Harlow Colts on many premier clubs fixture lists) and distinguish themselves in Harlow's first appearance at the Bristol Sevens. (Scummy became a sevens specialist and the experience of three sucessive Essex Colts Sevens championship seasons went with him in to the seniors as we enjoyed an unparalleled spell of numerous Essex Sevens and Hertford Floodlit Sevens tournament successes). His claim to fame as a colt was playing open side against Neath Athletic Youth and managing to catch and tackle Jonathon Davies once in 80 minutes (Davies was only 16 years old). Scummy's only disappointment as a colt was not repeating his brother's Essex Cup Winners achievement.

However, in his first senior season, Scummy was part of the Harlow First XV that were the talk of the County and reached the senior Essex Cup Final. We lost to Southend. Since then, despite league success and promotions, Harlow and Scummy have played and lost in three other Essex Cup Finals (Eton Manor and Barking twice). Winning the Essex Cup remains Scummy's unfulfilled ambition.

Scummy's other ambition is to manage another bottle of port before the end of the season - Annie thinks this is unlikely, but says that if Keith succeeds in being in a Harlow side that wins the Essex Cup before he retires then she'll drink the port for him!

Scummy thinks there's more chance of Annie downing a bottle of port in one than there is of him winning the Essex Cup, but he'll settle for avoiding relegation this season, sharing a glass of port with his team mates and scrounging a lift home after the last game!
