Stuart started playing at Harlow when he was 12. He played for Essex at under 15 level and was picked to tour South Africa in 1998 with Eastern Counties, He has played for every age group for Eastern Counties and also toured France in 2000 and in which they were undefeated including a game against Stade Francis, Pau & Biaritz. Stuart has played for Eastern Counties u16-u20 London SE development squads from u18-u20. As well as playing for London Welsh with Gary Brown and Steve Ward at colts and u21's. He managed to get into the Welsh Exiles u21 squad. He then moved to London Welsh at Colts level and won Middlesex Cup with them, beating Harlequins in the final first year and second year beat London Irish in the final when he was Captain. He played for London Welsh Under 21's against premiership U21 Welsh teams week in week out and made a handful of 2nd team appearances for London Welsh.
