Elton John and David Furnish’s wedding—Dec 21st, 2005

The overtures were most honoured and privileged to be invited by Sir Elton John and David Furnish to perform at their wedding reception on December 21st, 2005 in Windsor. In respect of their wishes to keep details of the reception private, we would just like to offer Elton and David our warmest congratulations and to thank them both for their wonderful welcome and for their great enthusiasm for the band. It was indeed the most unforgettable evening for us all. The evening was a superlative success, crowned with praise and compliments for The Overtures performance, especially from Sir Elton himself, describing The Overtures as “ F*****G Awesome! At the last Sponsors’ Lunch at the Rugby Club a close friend said to me “nice to see you down the club again, Ross, how about coming out of retirement and doing something for the club again?” - and he was right. So having had some experience of running Rugby Club dances in the past, next year’s summer ball, I promise you, will be a night to remember.

It will be held in a large marquee, independent of the club, but connected by a tunnel to the club through which the waiters and waitresses can supply your needs.

Why at the club? Well some of my best evenings in my life have been with friends at the club. Also we control the food which will be excellent and the beer and wine sales will be normal club prices and will help the club’s finances and not the inflated prices of an outside hotel.

The band – well!! I have got something to live up to with Marmalade, The Searchers, Cliff Bennett etc., in the past. Will this band be good? What do you think?

Now why am I writing to you so early? Well we have to decide how big a marquee we need. The table numbers will be either 10 or 12 people, so I want you to organise a table of your mates, rugby if possible (there may be some non rugby), but I want this to be a re-union of past and present members. I am contacting members from the 60s through to the present day, like yourself who have a presence in the club, who could put together their ‘old team’ or ‘tour party’ that they have had fond memories with. So it is a re-union of members and a re-union of friends.

Please help me by e-mailing me soon saying yes I will get a table together. I can then plan the size of the marquee. The event will not make money for the club (except from the sale of wine and beer) as the marquee is expensive and the bands are expensive and the food will be good. The ticket price will be £37.50 per person and the dress code will be “Posh Frocks and Bow Ties”. The tickets will be on sale in early January 2007 on a first come first served basis.

There will be a grand raffle. If you can help to donate a prize, it may be a free week at your villa, or sponsor the first course of the meal, whatever way you can help, the club will benefit.

You can tell that I am up for this and will make it a ‘night to remember’. This is your chance to get together with your rugby friends where you have had some of your happiest memories. I am committing myself 100% to this and with your help we will make it happen.
