Harlow Rugby Club Youth Round Up.     18th January 2004.

Harlow Colts  26   Hertford Colts 29.

It was the visitors who finished on top in this end to end battle the winning points coming from a drop goal three minutes before the final whistle.

Harlow took a 12-0 lead after five minutes with tries from Richard King and then prop Danny Lane, who was following up a break on the wing by Steve McClarnon. Martin O’Dell kicked the conversion from the touch line. Hartford began to settle down and launched a series of attacks eventually scoring in the corner. They continued to exert pressure on Harlow’s goal line but the defence held out and when prop Mark Bowering won the ball in mid-field the prop sprinted through to score under the posts, O’Dell easily converting to give the Young Rams a 19-7 lead at half time.

The visitors were not willing to concede defeat and mounted more attacks scoring a try from a rolling maul. They continued to dominate the possession and with two quick tries took the lead. Harlow fought their way back into ehrtford’s twenty two and from a ruck the ball was spum to Alasdaur Phillips who scored from ten metres out. Martin O’Dell’s conversion tied the scores. From the kick off Hertford again pushed up into Harlow’s half and their fly half scored with a drop goal. The Young Rams came up field but spurned a penalty which would have won them a drwa and in running it they lost possession and the final whistle went.

Having taken the lead early on when fly half Wayne Heapy broke through to score a try, the Harlow boys found themselves having to defend for long periods of time.

Hertford were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty after a further ten minutes but they missed another penalty attempt just before half time.

They kept Harlow pinned in their own twenty two for at least twenty minutes in the second half but some desperate defence kept the visitors out. Harlow broke away with Leigh Hitchen almost scoring but it was Hertford who continued to press forward.

The Young Rams held on to the final whistle and a well deserved win.

The Young Rams found themselves against a powerful pack of forwards and spent the game defending their line.

In a boisterous display the Hertford boys were too strong for the visitors and two Harlow players had to retire with cuts to be stitched.Although trailing by 26-0 at half time the Young Rams did not cave in and restricted Hertford to two tries in the second half.

The Young Rams were unable to win any decent ball against a well drilled and heavy pack. The Hertford team also made good use of their possession with their three quarters too fast for the Harlow defence.

It was to Harlow’s credit that they continued to try hard until the end but they had few opportunities to score against a well organised home defence.

In the second half they fell further behind but pressed forward and were rewarded with a Keiran Sugden try the flanker forcing his way over the line. Barney Goodey’s conversion brought the score to 12-15 but the Harlow boys could not manage the winner.
