Harlow Rugby Club Youth Round Up  Sunday 17th October 2004.

Upper Clapton Colts  0    Harlow Colts  32.

The Young Rams fourth win of the season came at the expense of a brave Upper Clapton side who were unlucky not to get on the score card despite being within a few metres of the Harlow line several times.

Clapton’s pack were full of aggression and competed well throughout but the Harlow forwards were equal to the task , releasing their swift running backs at every opportunity and the home side found their defences breached on a number of occasions.

Harlow opened the scoring through outside centre Jamie Fricker who scored the first of his two tries after ten minutes.Prop Ross Delgreco then got on the score sheet winning the ball ten metres out and passing the ball along the line for wing Grant Dunn to score, the difficult conversion put over by Martin O’Dell.

A tap penalty quickly taken by flanker Robert Cochrane gave Harlow a 17-0 lead at the interval. Full back James McFerran tackled his man just outside the Clapton twenty two, stole the ball  and raced through to score Harlow’s fourth try before another fine run by centre Wayne Heapy released winger Tom Smith to round his man and score in the corner. Fricker had the last word, his strength taking him through the defence to score on the left flank.

Harlow Colts. Delgreco, Newbury, Stonehouse, Thomas, Harris, Cochrane, Claridge, Hayden (Capt.), Kent-Pope, O’Dell, Heapy, Fricker, Smith, Dunn, McFerran, McClarnon, Watson, Mounsey, Gale.

Letchworth Under 17’s  12   Harlow Under 17’s  13.

Harlow fully deserved to win this cliff hanger against a side they have never before beaten. The Harlow pack played excellent rugby dominating the rucks and mauls and Mark Barr, at Flanker was outstanding. Two under 16’s played for the Young Rams, Chris Ellis and Matt Jarvis, and both played very well.

The home side took the lead with a try and conversion before Skipper Charlie Kavanagh kicked a perfect drop goal from 25 metres to put his team in contention.

The Young Rams then defended well to keep Letchworth at bay, taking the lead when hooker Ross Barrs crashed over, Kavanagh’s conversion giving Harlow a 10-7 lead at half time.

Letchworth came back with a try with five minutes left taking a two point lead but Harlow went forward for the win and a penalty converted by Kavanagh clinched a well deserved victory.

Harlow Under 17’s.  Yates, Barrs, Clinton, Ellis, Brennan, Barr, Smith, Jessey, Fitzpatrick, Kavanagh (Capt.), Guernico, Banks, Rundall, Quinton, Hearn, Lane, Jarvis.

Harlow Under 16’s  43  Upper Clapton Under 16’s  0.

The Junior Rams competed vigorously against a powerful Upper Clapton pack and used their possession well, their three quarters too quick and passing too slick for the visitors.

Number 8 Lee Mulvey scored Harlow’s first try which Joe Hynes converted. Each of the Harlow wingers then scored a try apiece both put through by some excellent passing moves. Scrum half Charlie Woodington scored just before half time profiting from a handling error by Clapton. Hynes’ Conversion gave them a lead of 24-0 at the interval.

Prop Mubashar Mahmood then burst through to score, his try converted by fly half Aled Hills before Hynes cut through the defence to add to Clapton’s woes. Harlow’s best try was by winger Matt Marriage, his first ever for the club. He caught a clearance kick forty metres out and sprinted past his marker to score in the corner. Aled Hills then sealed the win with a terrific touchline conversion.
