Youth Rugby Round Up

27th September 2009

Harlow Colts 15 Southend Colts 7

The Young Rams were pleased to record their first win of the new season against Southend   who had beaten  them only two weeks ago.

Harlow began well when a well struck penalty from thirty metres  by fly half Danny Smith went over  the posts. Within minutes Southend redressed the  balance and went into the lead. Slack defence allowed them to score a converted try to lead 7-3 at the interval.

In the second half Harlow began to dominate the possession against a big and heavy pack of forwards. Good work by Lewis , Ansell and Hammond kept the Young Rams on the front foot. Ten minutes into the second half saw Danny  Smith break the Southend defensive line to score, the try converted by Smith. Ten minutes before the end a superb backs move by Harlow saw Smith score his second try in thecorner.

Harlow met the Cambridgeshire  County champions at Cambridge and were given a lesson in fifteen man rugby. The home side also profited from the fact that injuries and unavailability forced Harlow to play players out of position in the pack.

Despite that handicap it was the Harlow forwards who were on top but when the Cambridge boys won possession they spun the ball wide and ran in four tries in the first half.

After the interval the Junior Rams had a good spell and flanker Andre Riddell won a loose ball and went for the goal line He was  stopped but passed to scrum half  Hayden McMaster who scored. As the match wore on Cambridge, with a large supply of substitutes began to wear down the tiring Junior Rams. The home side scored another four tries and a penalty with one conversion.

Harlow fought to the end and Manager Kevin Ellis was pleased with the boys’ performance and the spirit in which they played the game.

Their league game against Ilford next week has been postponed as Ilford cannot get a side out. Westcliff “B” have taken Ilford’s place in the league and the Harlow boys now know what standard they will be playing at, at this level.
Westcliff dominated the early stages and took a five nil lead with a try but no conversion. This spurred the Junior Rams into action and Full Back Tom Cunningham scored a try which was well converted by inside centre Scott Whitby.
The home side replied with a second unconverted try and the score at half time was 7-10 to Westcliff. Harlow made a few changes in the second half and took control of the game., They scored five more tries and Scott Whitby was successful with three more conversions. Flanker Fraser Bleach opened the scoring for the Junior Rams then Mitchell Sinfield (outside centre ) scored. Fly half Jordan Shipp was the next to score before Whitby added a try to his conversions giving him a personal tally of 13 points.
